이웅배 개인전 <작은 것들의 낯선 세계>
“최근에 대도시에서 전원으로 이사를 왔다. 건물이 빼곡하지 않고 인적이 뜸한 이곳에서 낯선 것을 꽤 많이 만난다. 하늘, 바람, 구름, 어두움, 별, 비와 눈 등 전에는 그다지 인상적이지 않던 것들이 여기서는 뭔가 다르게 다가오는데 여유를 두고 바라보면 이들과의 거리가 좁혀진다. 산과 들에 핀 각종 꽃과 나무들, 새와 곤충과 이것들의 소리, 고라니, 어쩌다 뱀까지. 언제부터인가 야생 고양이들이 우리 집 뜰에 들락거리더니 그중 하나가 아예 눌러앉은 것도 보인다. 어느 정도 시간이 지나니 문득 이곳의 낯섦에 점차 익숙해지는 것은 이들의 환대 때문이라는 생각이 들었다. 그 덕에 이사 온 동네가 익숙해지고 편안해지기 시작한 것이 아닌가 싶다.”
“I recently moved from a large city to a rural area. Here, where buildings are sparse and people are few, I have encountered many unfamiliar things. The sky, the wind, clouds, darkness, stars, rain, and snow—things that once felt unremarkable—now approach me differently. When I take the time to observe them slowly, I find the distance between us begins to shrink. Flowers and trees blooming in the fields and mountains, birds and insects and their sounds, even a roe deer or, occasionally, a snake. At some point, stray cats began wandering into our yard, and now one of them has settled in as if it belongs here.
After a while, I began to feel that this growing sense of familiarity with the unfamiliar was thanks to their quiet welcome. Perhaps it is this gentle hospitality that made this new neighborhood feel increasingly familiar and comforting to me.”
